Rehabilitation

A caring approach to restoring quality of life

Recovering from an injury or illness requires teamwork. It takes a patient who's willing to make the effort. It takes the support of family and friends. It takes medical supervision from the patient's physician. And to achieve the fullest possible recovery, it often takes rehabilitation services.

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital offers a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, all with the goal of helping our patients overcome their limitations and achieve their full recovery potential. Our rehabilitation unit serves hundreds of stroke, orthopedic and other patients of all ages a year. Occupying the hospital’s entire eighth floor, the accredited program includes three gym areas, its own dedicated professional staff and virtually every service a patient might need -- including physical, speech, occupational and recreational therapy.

Available at five convenient locations in Belleville, O’Fallon and Mascoutah, our outpatient rehabilitation services include:

Occupational therapy — Our occupational therapists help patients of all ages who have physical, developmental, emotional and social needs. Through rehabilitation, we teach the skills they need to lead independent and productive lives. Our therapists help patients rebuild motor skills and relearn the activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing, grooming and cooking. We also provide the instruction and help our patients and their families need to adjust their homes to meet special needs.

Low vision therapy — Our Low Vision program helps visually impaired patients learn to use their limited eyesight more effectively in daily life.

Speech therapy — Our speech therapists treat patients of all ages who have problems with speech, language, hearing or swallowing. They can also strengthen a patient’s ability to read and write, recall information, organize and express thoughts, and use problem-solving skills. Special programs are available to children and those who have hearing loss.

Voice Clinic — St. Elizabeth’s Hospital has the only Voice Clinic in Southern Illinois offering videostroboscopy, the latest diagnostic tool for identifying voice problems. Individualized treatment programs are offered by our team of medical professionals, which includes a board-certified ear-nose-throat physician and a speech-language pathologist.

Back-to-Work Center — Physical and occupational therapists work together at our Back-to-Work Center to help injured employees return to the workplace. Our rehabilitation programs are individually tailed to each patient’s needs, employing the latest simulation devices, exercise programs and body mechanics education.
