PGY1 Residency at St. Elizabeth’s
The St. Elizabeth’s Hospital PGY1 residency is a unique learning experience with incredible flexibility for the individual resident. Although subject to change, typical learning experience blocks are one month in duration beginning on the 1st day of each month and culminating on the last day of each month. Required learning experiences include: Orientation, Drug Information, Internal Medicine I & II, Administration, Medication Safety, Ambulatory Care. Elective rotations available include Cardiology*, Oncology*, Mental Health*, Pain Management, Infectious Diseases*, Pediatrics*, and Ambulatory Care II. Those electives noted with an asterisks denote off-site rotations.
Additional learning experiences include a residency project and longitudinal rotation. Currently available longitudinal experiences to choose from include Ambulatory Care (VA and non-VA, Pain Management, or HIV pharmacotherapy)

Scott Bergman, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Scott Bergman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and an infectious diseases clinical pharmacy specialist. Dr. Bergman holds a joint appointment with the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield where he participates in multi-disciplinary inpatient teaching rounds as well as outpatient clinics. Dr. Bergman joined SIUE from West Virginia University Hospitals and School of Pharmacy where he completed residencies in pharmacy practice and infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. He graduated from the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University with a Pharm.D. and B.S. Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Bergman’s areas of interest include the appropriate treatment of healthcare-associated infections such as nursing home-acquired pneumonia and catheter-related biofilms.
Jing Fan, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Jingyang Fan is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Prior to joining SIUE, Dr. Fan served as an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Southern Nevada, College of Pharmacy. Dr. Fan received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and subsequently completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Kentucky, where she also obtained a Certificate for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. She has been a board certification pharmacotherapy specialist since 2003. In addition to her faculty appointment at SIUE, Dr. Fan also provides clinical services in cardiology at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Fan is interested in various areas of pharmacy practice including cardiology, critical care, and diabetes. Her research areas of interest include anticoagulation, heart failure, diabetes, and innovative teaching methods.
McKenzie Ferguson, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. McKenzie Ferguson is Assistant Professor, Pharmacy Practice and practices in the Drug Information and Wellness Center. Dr. Ferguson received her B.A. from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and then completed her doctor of pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at SSM St. Mary’s Health Center. Dr. Ferguson became a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist in 2008. She will be teaching in the Statistics and Literature Evaluation and Drug Information classes during fall and spring semesters. Her research interests include advancement of health literacy and patient safety and professional leadership development for students, residents and preceptors.
Kelly Gable, PharmD, BCPP
Dr. Kelly Gable, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, joined the SIUE School of Pharmacy from the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy. Dr. Gable is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, School of Pharmacy, and subsequently completed a specialty residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice at the University of Southern California. Dr. Gable is a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist. She currently holds joint appointments with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology and Psychiatry, as well as with the Missouri Department of Mental Health. Her clinical appointment is with Community Alternatives in St. Louis Missouri, where she works collaboratively with psychiatry in the treatment of persons with persistent mental illnesses. Her areas of interest include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, Assertive Community Treatment, and medication adherence in the mentally ill.
Keith Hecht, PharmD, BCOP
Dr. Keith Hecht is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Prior to joining SIUE, Dr. Hecht served as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Southern Nevada, College of Pharmacy. Dr. Hecht received his B.S. (2000) and Doctorate of Pharmacy (2001) from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Subsequently, he completed a pharmacy practice residency and an oncology specialty residency at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, where he also obtained a Certificate for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. He has been a board certified oncology pharmacy specialist since 2004. In addition to his faculty appointment at SIUE, Dr. Hecht also provides clinical services in inpatient oncology at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center. Dr. Hecht is interested in various areas of oncology pharmacy practice including supportive care, patient education, and optimizing patient adherence with oncology medications. His research areas of interest include growth factor support, anti-infective use, and regimen optimization in oncology patients.
Chris Herndon, PharmD, BCPS, CPE
Dr. Chris Herndon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Previously, Dr. Herndon served as a Senior Science and Research Liaison, Analgesia for Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Herndon received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and subsequently completed a Specialty Residency in Geriatrics at the University of New Mexico. He served as an Assistant Professor at the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy prior to joining industry. His current practice site is with the St. Louis University / Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL. Dr. Herndon’s research interests focus on pain and palliative care.
Jessica Kerr, PharmD, CDE
Dr. Jessica Kerr, Assistant Professor, joined the SIUE School of Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. Dr. Kerr is a graduate of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where she earned both her B.S. and doctorate in pharmacy. She trained at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo, Texas, where she specialized in primary care. Her current practice site is in coordination with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Belleville outpatient clinic, which provides geriatric care and cardiovascular risk management services to United States veterans living in Southern Illinois.
Lisa Lubsch, PharmD, AE-C
Dr. Lisa Lubsch is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pharmacy Practice Department and a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Lubsch received the B.S. and Doctorate of Pharmacy from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and completed a pediatric specialty residency at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy. She most recently was on faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy with a practice site at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in the Adolescent Medicine, Pulmonary, and Endocrine clinics. Her current areas of interests are adolescent medication adherence, pediatric asthma, cystic fibrosis, and overweight / Type 2 diabetes.
Megan Martin-Leitzen, PharmD
Megan Martin-Leitzen, PharmD is a clinical specialist at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Megan graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 2003 and completed a one-year Pharmacy Practice Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, Oregon. Prior to joining St. Elizabeth’s Megan worked in community practice as the Pharmacist-In-Charge at CVS pharmacy in Columbia, IL and continues to work for local independent community pharmacies as needed. She is currently a Rotation Coordinator for SIUE "Introductory to Pharmacy Practice Experience" students. Megan's practice interests include: anticoagulation, infectious disease, and patient education. She is a member of ICHP & ASHP.
Michael Randazzo, PharmD
Dr. Michael Randazzo is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL. He serves as one of the Pharmacy Practice residency preceptors for the internal medicine and medication safety rotations in addition to precepting SIUE Advanced Pharmacy Practice students. Dr. Randazzo is a graduate of St. Louis College of pharmacy where he earned his B.S. and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. He subsequently completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL. His main areas of interest include medication safety and infectious diseases.

Adam Thacker, RPh, MBA
Mr. Thacker is the Director of Pharmacy Services and he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He earned his Masters in Business Administration from Regis University. Prior to joining St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, he was the inpatient pharmacy supervisor at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a member of ASHP, ACHE, and ICHP. Mr. Thacker serves as the preceptor for the residency management learning experience.
Erin Timpe, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Erin Timpe is Director of the SIUE Drug Information and Wellness Center and is an Assistant Professor in the Pharmacy Practice Department. Dr. Timpe completed a drug information specialty residency at The University of Tennessee (UT) in Memphis. During that time she also gained experience at the Southern Poison Center and UT Family Medicine Clinic. She remained at UT as a faculty member before her appointment at SIUE. She received the B.S. and Pharm.D. degrees from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist and an officer for the Drug Information Practice and Research Network through the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Julie Schimmelpfennig, MS, BCPS, CDE
Dr. Julia Schimmelpfennig is the Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, Illinois. Dr. Schimmelpfennig received her B.S. and doctorate in pharmacy from the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy. She then acquired her Masters of Science in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. After completion of a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Louisville, Dr. Schimmelpfennig practiced in the Ambulatory Clinics at St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights, Missouri. Prior to joining St. Elizabeth’s Dr. Schimmelpfennig worked in the area of Compliance in Clinical Trials at Barnes Jewish Hospital. Her areas of interest include management of chronic diseases and clinical research.
