St. Elizabeth's Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Receives Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is pleased to announce Chief Nursing Officer, Shelley Harris, has received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville (SIUE), becoming the first Chief Nursing Officer at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, on record, to hold this prestigious degree.

“We are pleased to honor Dr. Harris’ achievements”, said Maryann Reese, President and CEO of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. “Her commitment to excellence in health care and unwavering dedication to serving our region is to be commended.”

While Harris has worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for many years serving in multiple roles, both at staff and leadership levels, she feels privileged to bring this high-level of nursing to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

“The American Nurses Association (ANA) contends that the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree (DNP) prepares graduates for multiple roles in today’s changing healthcare environment”, said Harris, “and I believe that this preparation will assist me and other nursing leaders to respond to the many challenges faced today.”

Harris received her nursing degree from Southwestern Illinois College, previously Belleville Area College in 1984. She earned a Masters of Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Healthcare and Nursing Administration from Southern Illinois University. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders and American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
