SLU FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY

SLU Family Medicine Residency

Training family physicians to serve our community

Before a doctor can receive certification as a family practitioner, he or she must complete three years of specialty training in family medicine. Each year, as many as 42 of these doctors complete this training at Saint Louis University Family Medicine, a residency program sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Saint Louis University.

Located across the street from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at 180 South Third Street, SLU Belleville Family Medicine trains medical residents in a broad base of family medicine skills, including internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, sports medicine and others. Local residents are welcome to seek medical services through the program.

Training occurs in a series of rotations completed at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, the offices of community physicians, Scott Air Force Base outpatient clinics, Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation and Saint Louis University sites. In addition to residents, the program’s staff includes Saint Louis University-affiliated doctors who serve as faculty members for the residency program and assist with patients, as needed.

Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the program accepts up to six new “civilian” residents each year through the National Residency Match Program. The program also accepts up to eight new military residents a year through the Joint Services Graduate Medical Education Selection Board. This three-year program is designed to qualify its graduates to take the examination needed for certification by the American Board of Family Medicine.
